As part of its ongoing environmental conservation initiatives, THDC India Limited’s VPHE Project has launched a district-wide campaign of Nukkad Nataks (street plays) aimed at spreading awareness on ecological and environmental issues among the public.
The campaign was formally flagged off at the main market in Chamoli on 06th May 2025 by Sh. K.P. Singh, General Manager (Social & Environment/TBM), VPHEP. The street plays are being staged by the Himalayan Culture Committee, Uttarakhand, a cultural organisation known for its grassroots outreach. A total of 30 performances have been scheduled across key locations, including the villages of Baula, Birhi, Guniyala, Bemru, Naurakh, Palla-Helang, Gulabkoti, Salood, and towns such as Joshimath, Pipalkoti, Gopeshwar, and Chamoli.
Addressing the gathering at the inaugural event, Sh. K.P. Singh said, “Nukkad Nataks are an effective way to deliver social and environmental messages directly to the community. Through engaging and relatable performances, we are reaching out to people across different age groups to instil a sense of responsibility towards nature and the Himalayas.”
The awareness campaign has received enthusiastic response from local residents and is being actively supported by the Badrinath Forest Division, whose officials are participating in several of the programs. The performances are focused on themes such as forest conservation, cleanliness, climate change, and the importance of sustainable development.
Speaking on the occasion, Sh. Ajay Verma, Head of Project, VPHEP, highlighted THDCIL’s environmental ethos, “Environmental stewardship is integral to THDCIL’s mission. Through the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project, we aim not only to provide clean energy but also to promote ecological harmony. These street plays are a part of our wider strategy to involve communities in the preservation of their natural surroundings.”
President of the Himalayan Culture Committee, Sh. Kamal Danu, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and noted that the campaign has witnessed encouraging participation and appreciation from the public.
The Nukkad Natak initiative is expected to continue over the coming weeks, covering a broad geographical area of Chamoli district with the aim of fostering lasting environmental consciousness among residents.
