To support the conservation of indigenous fish species and implement the Fish Management Plan for the Vishnugad–Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project (VPHEP), a two-day Ranching and Awareness Program was successfully conducted on March 23–24, 2025. The initiative, held near the Berhi tributary of the Alaknanda River, was jointly organized by VPHEP-THDC India Limited, the ICAR-Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries Research (ICAR-CICFR), Bhimtal, and the Department of Fisheries, Chamoli.
The program aimed to enhance the population of the Schizothorax spp. (snow trout), a key indicator of river health and biodiversity. Over 200 highquality, disease-free snow trout brooders and 5,000 fry were released into the Alaknanda River, reinforcing conservation efforts and ecological restoration.
The event brought together project personnel, fishery scientists, government officials, and local community members to discuss the impact of human induced changes on aquatic ecosystems and the need for sustainable fisheries management. Shri Jitendra Singh Bisht, General Manager (Social, Environment & Mechanical), VPHEP, emphasized the critical role of indigenous fish conservation in maintaining ecological balance. Other key speakers, including Sh. K.P. Singh, GM (TBM), Sh. S.P. Dobhal, AGM (Power House), Sh. R.S. Makhloga, DGM (HM), and Sh. Anil Bhatt, DGM (TBM), shared insights on environmental conservation strategies.
Underscoring the importance of this initiative, Head of Project (VPHEP), Sh. Ajay verma said, “THDC India Limited is committed to environmental sustainability, and this initiative reflects our responsibility towards preserving aquatic biodiversity. The conservation of snow trout is not only crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of the Alaknanda River but also for safeguarding the livelihoods of local communities dependent on fisheries. Through collaborative efforts with scientific institutions and local stakeholders, we aim to create a sustainable and thriving ecosystem. THDC will continue supporting initiatives that protect natural resources and promote responsible environmental practices.”
Dr. Suresh Chandra, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CICFR, Bhimtal, highlighted the significance of Himalayan river systems, underscoring the importance of protecting these ‘Water Banks’ for future generations. Shri Ritesh Chand, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Chamoli, provided an overview of fisheries development in the region and stressed the role of local communities in conservation efforts.
Shri Dheeraj Adhikari, Environmental Engineer, VPHEP, and Shri Khati coordinated the program, ensuring its effective implementation. The initiative actively engaged local fishermen and villagers, promoting awareness about the necessity of sustainable fishing practices and environmental stewardship.
The event marked a significant step toward addressing ecological challenges and strengthening conservation efforts in the region. The active participation of stakeholders and the successful release of snow trout reaffirm THDC’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
