MALSHEJ GHAT PSS

  • The Malshej Ghat Pumped Storage Scheme (PSS) is situated on the river Kalu on the border of Pune & Thane Districts in Western Maharashtra. For the Upper Dam site, the nearest Airport is Pune (145 Km), nearest Rail head is Kalyan (105 Km). For the Lower Dam site, which falls in Thane District, the nearest Airport is Mumbai (165 Km), nearest Rail head is Kalyan (85 Km). The project envisages an installed capacity of 700 MW with two reversible units of 350 MW capacity each.
     
    The Project mainly comprises of following as per draft DPR:
     
    The Upper and Lower Dam (about 2 Km downstream of Upper Dam) both are proposed on river Kalu. The Upper Dam and Lower Dam both are [Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC)] and having O.F. & N.O.F. sections totaling to 2450 m and 682 m length respectively. The max. Heights of both the dams are 37 m and 62 m respectively with ungated spillway (Ogee). The Khubi bund (earthen) 17 m height is separating two reservoirs i.e. Upper reservoir of PSS hydel scheme and reservoir of Pimpalgaon Joge Irrigation project.
     
    The water conductor system consisting of Intake structure (vertical), Control shaft, HRT (350 m) and one inclined pressure shaft (length- 650 m & dia- 6.5 m bifurcating to 4.5 m near Power House) leading to P. H. to feed two nos. of reversible Pump/ Turbine units of 350 MW capacity each. The tail discharge from P. H. is taken through a common   1110 m long Tailrace (dia - 9.0 m) to the lower reservoir with downstream surge shaft, outfall structure (horizontal) at end with trash rack panels.
     
    The underground Power House is consisting of Machine hall & Inlet Valve house, and Transformer hall & d/s Valve house with cavity sizes 120 m X 25 m X 52 m and 76 m X 22 m X 24 m respectively. The Cable and Ventilation tunnel (length- 925 m, D-shape 5 m X 5 m) connecting Machine hall & Transformer hall.  The Main Access tunnel (length- 1370 m, D-shape 7.6 m X 8.5 m) provided from left bank of lower dam to the Service bay of the Power House.
     
    The Project would afford Annual Generation of 1680 MU, while the off-peak requirement of energy for Pumping is  2237 MU annually. As per the draft DPR, the estimated cost of project is ` 2695.26 Crores including IDC & FC ` 298.86 Crs (but excluding Transmission cost ` 130.65 Crs) at May’ 2010 price level. The first year and levelised Conversion Cost of project would be ` 3.41 & ` 2.89 per unit respectively.
