HUMBARLI PSS

  • The Humbarli Pumped Storage Scheme (PSS) is situated on the Vazarde Nallah (a tributary of Koyna River) near village Humbarli, Taluka-Patan, District-Satara. The Upper dam site is approachable from Pune – Bangalore National Highway No.3 from Karad up to Humbarli via Koyna Nagar. Further from Humbarli to Upper dam site is 6 Km. 
     
    The project envisages an installed capacity of 400 MW with one pressure shaft leading to underground Power with suitable ‘Y’ piece arrangement to feed two numbers of reversible pump / turbine units of 200 MW each with upper and lower reservoirs.
     
    For upper Dam site, the nearest Airport is Karad (50 Km), Nearest Rail head is Karad (70 Km) and nearest Town is Karad, Tal-Karad, Dist, Satara (60 Km). The Lower dam site is approachable from Pune – Bangalore National highway No.3 that falls in Satara District, is about 98 km. from Satara and 20 km. from Patan.
            The Civil Works mainly comprises of;
     
    Upper Dam  is proposed as masonry dam having total length 450 m. with O.F & N.O.F portions at the center. Intake structure is proposed in the body of the Dam at the deepest portion. The existing Shivsagar i.e. Koyna reservoir is treated as a lower reservoir and is situated near village Helwak in Patan Taluka of Satara district. This is masonry dam with total length of 832 m including O.F 85.50 m in length.
     
    The water conductor system consists of intake structure (vertical type) and one inclined pressure shaft (dia. 5.8 m/5.2 m , length, 880 m ) leading to underground power house with suitable ‘Y’ piece arrangement to feed two nos. of reversible pump/ turbine units of 200 MW each. The water discharging from draft tubes and the down stream valves will be collected through a “Y” piece and will be let out through Single Tail Race Tunnel (8.5 m. dia and length 2215 m) to the lower reservoir with outfall structure at end.
     
    The underground power house will be located in good massive rock formation about 310 M, below average ground level. It is proposed to house the Machine Hall & Inlet valve house in one cavern. The overall length of the Machine Hall & Inlet valve house required for 2 units or 200 MW each including service bay is 72 m x 20 m.
     
    The Transformer hall of size 70m x 20m is provided in separate cavern situated 25 m on the D/S side of the machine hall to accommodate two transformer units and D/S valve house.  Separate access to this cavern is provided through horizontal tunnel reaching the unloading and erection bay in the Transformer hall.
     
    The Project would afford annual generation of 751 MU, while the off-peak requirement of energy for pumping is 1067 MU annually. As per Pre Feasibility Report, the project is estimated to cost ` 838.92 crores at 1996 price levels. The first year tariff from the project would be `2.10 / KWh.
